Ok I've watched this a few times and I'm still not quite sure what to think. It totally took me by surprise. At first I thought it would just be a really boring cream commercial. You know the usual suspects: "OMG I love this cream! It's so affective! Almost as affective as the six hours worth of work on photo shop! YAY!" (Fine I'm exaggerating just a bit) But when I actually watched it I was really taken aback. After a watched it a couple more times I started to find it oddly funny. It evoked a lot of emotion that I couldn't, and still can't, trace back to its source. Whatever emotion it was evoking worked because I kept thinking about it for quite a while after I watched it. I think it was very powerful and thought evoking. I think the main reason that this made such an impression was because it made you feel guilty and fearful. In conclusion it was a great PSA on racism. I have to give props to the person who came up with this idea. I think that the shock of this add is really affective and definitely worth spreading.
I agree that the element of shock makes this very effective. It makes me think of when we describe people as 'beautiful, inside and out'. The producers of this PSA have tried to give a visual image to an attitude (racism) and they have selected something that most people will find repulsive and ugly. Which persuasive techniques do you see used here?
ReplyDeleteAt the end of the PSA they used a personal pronoun to try and bring it home. I think the key to the overall affect was when the woman said "What's the secret to your transformation?" Its hard to see how they were being persuassive because there was so little talking but I think the over exageration of the woman's ugliness grabbed your attention and then the explanation implanted a subconcious message telling you how disgusting racism is.
ReplyDeleteewwwwww that girls face looks TERRIBLE! but this commercial has a very good point. I feel that this would raise awareness about racism
